[1] Apple Servers Win in Web Server Cost-of-Ownership Study

The Business Research Group, based in Newton, Massachusetts, just published a study that finds that Apple Workgroup Servers offer a considerable advantage in overall web server cost of ownership, ease of use, and maintenance for customers in medium-sized businesses (100-499 employees) or workgroups (50 or fewer employees inside a larger company).

The newest member of the MessagePad family features increased system memory, higher performance, and upgraded communications software. The English and German versions of the MessagePad 2100 will be available worldwide in November.

[3] MkLinux, DR 2.1, Update 5

MkLinux Developer Release (DR) 2.1, Update 5, includes support for large memory configurations, altered bus speeds, virtual memory, and Twin Turbo PCI cards. MkLinux is a port of Linux, a freely distributed version of UNIX, and it runs in native mode on the PowerPC microprocessor.

[4] SPA Packaging Competition Deadline Extended to October 31

Apple encourages you to submit your best package designs to the Software Publishers Association (SPA) 1998 Excellence in Software Packaging Awards competition. Winners will be recognized at the 1998 SPA Spring Symposium, March 21-24, in San Jose, California. The deadline for nominations has been extended to October 31.

[5] Mac OS 8 Sales Reach the Two-Million Mark

Claris credits its record fourth-quarter revenue (U.S.$ 91.1 million) largely to outstanding sales of Mac OS 8--2 million user copies of Mac OS 8 to date, making Mac OS 8 the best-selling new Mac operating system software in history.

Apple recently upgraded its software download system to include 16 servers that, in total, can serve 8,000 simultaneous high-speed FTP connections. The new FTP site also allows you to access all available servers from a single web page.

[7] Tool Vendors: Reserve Developer Central Booth Space by Oct. 31

If you market development tools, you may be interested in reserving space in the Developer Central Booth at MACWORLD Expo in San Francisco (January 6-9). For details, send an e-mail message by October 31, 1997 to dc-reservations@devcentral.com. A small station costs US$ 3,750 and includes signage, electricity, and space for one computer. A station twice the size costs US$ 7,500.
